The New Year has begun, and while Winter is well under way there are now little hints of Spring – signs of the returning light with tiny little buds appearing or bulbs not quite rearing their heads yet. We’ve compiled a list of winter activities that the children can take part in during the lockdown period.

1. Walk in a winter wonderlandn
n
The weather has turned colder, we might be back in lockdown again, but you can still use your daily permitted exercise to get the kids exploring the outdoors!
n
Wrap your children up warm and get them exploring the wonderful colours and textures of winter. Taking a winter walk is also great for your child’s mental and physical health and allows them to capture the natural changes the season has brought, perhaps you’ll notice the new beginnings of nature emerging, signalling Spring’s upcoming arrival.
nn
2. Take stock of the changing seasons
nn
Exploring the outdoors and taking note of the changing seasons is a great way for children to learn about nature and the important role it plays. In fact, using the senses to touch and see the natural changes helps to stimulate and educate children. Trudging through the frosted ground and observing the change in colours and landscapes.

We have outdoor spaces at our beautifully natural day nursery in Broadheath, Altrincham
n
for use all year round allowing the children to engage with resources on a larger scale and to gain a deeper connection with nature, the elements and the changing of the seasons.

3. Find your inner Picasso
nn
We believe that children learn best through play, which is why we encourage learning through fun activities, interactions, and creative projects.
nn
One of the best lockdown pursuits, for children and adults alike, is painting! Spending time stuck inside offers the best time for your child to find their inner Picasso. By painting a frosted leaf or winter scene taken from an outdoor walk, you can encourage your child to not only get creative but to connect with nature and the changing seasons, too.
nn
At our day nursery in Altrincham, we encourage creative play with dedicated spaces called ‘Ateliers’ for children to paint, draw, sculpt, and craft.

4. Embrace the season of Hygge
nn
Winter is the season of Hygge, where we can embrace home comforts and treasure time with the loved ones we live with, which is important now more than ever.
nn
Hygge is the concept of having a calm, comfortable time with people you love. A complete absence of frustrations, or anything emotionally overwhelming, often enjoyed with warmth and good food. Adopting this concept now that we are in the new year, should have a positive impact on your children as we know that children excel in a comfortable and calm environment which is why, at Back to the Garden, we have created an indoor space with an emphasis on calm colours and natural resources perfect for child-led play.
