The children’s wellbeing is key to our curriculum at our natural day nursery in Altrincham. Three of our core principles are: respect, warmth, and wellbeing. We understand that children learn best when they are happy and comfortable, this is especially important during the unprecedented times we are currently in.

Creating a sense of normality for the children in our day nursery and at home should benefit their learning and development. We have come up with a list of positive pastimes for the children to take part in both at home and at Back to the Garden for a sense of wellbeing and empowerment!

1. Meditationnn
n
Meditation is a great way to remain grounded, centred, and balanced. At Back to the Garden childcare we have a dedicated outdoor space in the form of our tepee, for meditation and related holistic practises. n
n
Finding any quiet space in the home at any time of day, for your children to take part in meditation, mindfulness, belly breathing, or other grounding practises should help instil a sense of inner calm and balance. nn

2. Affirmationsnn
n
February is the month of love, a month to celebrate the special people in your life – this includes yourself! Our minds are powerful things which is why self-love, self-care, and positive affirmations are so important! We use affirmations cards with the children to promote positive thinking and manifestation, this can easily be adopted at home. nn

3. Musicnn
n
‘If music be the food of love, play on’nn We have resources to support imaginative play and storytelling such as musical instruments to encourage the children to have fun with sounds and language through music. Music acts as a positive stimulant for learning words, sounds, and rhythm as well as creating a sense of calm, wellbeing, and enjoyment. Even if you do not have music instruments at home, you can get creative by using pots, pans, or other household objects which makes music time all the more fun!nn

4. Creativity
nn
We have areas within our day nursery in Altrincham called ‘Ateliers’ which are dedicated to creative play such as mark making, crafting, sculpturing, and painting. Allowing children to express themselves through creative pursuits offers an outlet for both positive and negative emotions and allows them to learn in their own ways. Taking time to paint or undertake other creative activities with your children not only helps them learn but is both a relaxing and rewarding pastime.
