At our Lymm nursery, we recently celebrated the birthday of the NHS and what started as a small spark of curiosity turned into a rich, imaginative learning experience across our Rising 3’s and Preschool groups.

The children explored ideas around caring for babies and being doctors, inspired by the important work the NHS does every day. This quickly expanded into a broader theme: People Who Help Us. We introduced a wide range of real-world roles including doctors, midwives, paramedics, firefighters, postal workers, and dentists. This helped the children build an early understanding of how communities work.
Through role play, storytelling, and small-world setups, the children showed such care and compassion – checking applying plasters and comforting babies in the “baby clinic”, creating doctors bags – adding what doctors need, creating teeth brushing art, helping with a house fire, exploring a ‘fire’ tuff tray and looking at the colours of uniforms with coloured pencils, practicing their fine motor skills.

This theme sparked wonderful conversations about kindness, bravery, and responsibility. Through imaginative play and real-world connections, the children learned more about the world around them and the many ways we can help and support each other.
A Real-World Connection: Visit from Lymm Fire Service
One of the most exciting moments came when Lymm Fire Service visited the nursery. The children were able to see a real fire engine, meet the firefighters, try the hose, climb aboard, try on the helmet, watch the car cutters in action with a water bottle and ask them questions – the children talked about their visit for days to come. They were so excited and inspired and parents said how much they loved it. Amazing idea and planning from Abbey. Alisha was a star and even tried on the uniform!
You can see a video of the visit here!
These experiences aren’t just fun, they’re deeply educational. Through role play and real-world connections, children are:
- Building empathy and emotional intelligence
- Expanding their vocabulary and communication skills
- Developing a sense of community, responsibility, and teamwork
- Exploring themes of bravery, care, and kindness
As educators, we see first-hand how play is the language of children. When we give them the space and tools to explore the world through play, we help them make sense of it and begin to imagine their own place within it.
At Back to the Garden, we believe in nurturing not just curiosity, but community and our People Who Help Us week was a shining example of how powerful those connections can be.
